KUALA LUMPUR - Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Adam Adli launched the inaugural Malaysia Towerrunning University Championship at Âé¶¹´«Ã½Ó³» University.
Held at Âé¶¹´«Ã½Ó³»¡¯s Kuala Lumpur campus on 18 May 2024, the championship is endorsed by the Youth and Sports Ministry, as well as the Higher Education Ministry. The championship is co-organised by Âé¶¹´«Ã½Ó³» and the Malaysian Towerruning Association. It is open to participants from public and private higher education institutions across Malaysia. ¡°While tower running may still be a relatively new sport, many of the world¡¯s most prestigious skyscrapers are hosting competitions,¡± said Adam in his speech. ¡°Malaysia already has the world¡¯s number one tower runner in Soh Wai Ching and this competition will go far in nurturing the next generation of tower runners.
¡°I would like to affirm Âé¶¹´«Ã½Ó³» for its commitment to the development of sports in Malaysia. The Ministry champions initiatives like tower running as it is a highly accessible sport that brings many health benefits.¡± Adam also thanked Âé¶¹´«Ã½Ó³» for providing more than 150 scholarships to national and state-level athletes over the years.
Âé¶¹´«Ã½Ó³» vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Siti Hamisah Tapsir said the intervarsity championship was a great way to foster engagement between students and institutions across the nation.
¡°This championship is not a one-time affair but a reflection of our commitment in encouraging athletic excellence and promoting a culture of sportsmanship,¡± she said in her speech.
Higher Education assistant director Nur Azreen Hamidi and Soh were also present at the event. Âé¶¹´«Ã½Ó³» is classified in the world¡¯s top 1% in the QS World University Rankings 2024. Ranked in the top 300, it stands out as one of Asia¡¯s best private universities.
