Civil Engineers plan, design, construct and maintain buildings, airports, harbours, roads, railways, bridges, and tunnels among others. Thus, Civil Engineers play a very important role in shaping and controlling the environment (e.g. water and waste, floods and irrigation, traffic management).
This programme is excellent preparation for a career in Civil Engineering as it encompasses specialisations such as structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, hydrology and hydraulic engineering, highway and traffic engineering, water and waste water engineering, and project management. Graduates of the programme would be equipped for almost any profession that requires good analytical and professional skills. Common work avenues for Civil Engineers include working with construction companies, consulting companies, property developers, project management companies, water supply companies, research organisations, oil and gas companies as well as offshore industries, and other companies that deal with structure or infrastructure development and maintenance. Alternatively, graduates of the programme can explore careers options in relevant government departments such as the public works department, the highway department, as well as the department of drainage and irrigation, among others.
