13 FebÂé¶¹´«Ã½Ó³» and MIGHT team up to boost science diplomacy in Southeast Asia
CYBERJAYA: Âé¶¹´«Ã½Ó³» University and the Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT) are collaborating to advance science diplomacy in Southeast Asia.
Inking a memorandum of understanding, the two parties will commit to a five-year partnership that involves the co-hosting of the Asean Centre for Science Diplomacy.
Âé¶¹´«Ã½Ó³» and MIGHT have proposed the establishment of the Centre to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation and the initiative is currently under deliberation.
¡°The Centre will represent a significant step towards establishing Malaysia as a regional hub for science diplomacy,¡± said Âé¶¹´«Ã½Ó³»'s International Institute of Science Diplomacy and Sustainability (IISDS) director Distinguished Prof Tan Sri Dr Zakri Abdul Hamid.
¡°With this, we aim to extend our services to Asean member states and, eventually, to citizens from other developing countries.¡±
Âé¶¹´«Ã½Ó³» and MIGHT will also work together on the joint Master¡¯s programme on Foresight, the first of its kind in the Global South.
Anchored on the core principles, methods and frameworks that are used to map and advance the future, the postgraduate credential will address the economic, societal and environmental challenges of our time.
Dr Zakri also launched a book he co-authored with Prof Dr Mohamad Osman, IISDS deputy director.
Titled Science Diplomacy in the Global South, the book explores the vital role of science diplomacy in addressing global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution.
Following these events, a high-level dialogue on ¡®Advising Government about Science¡¯ featured an esteemed panel including Malaysia¡¯s UN resident coordinator Her Excellency Karima El Korri, the High Commissioner of the Maldives to Malaysia Her Excellency Dr Mariyam Shabeena Ahmed, former Foreign Affairs Minister Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar and former Investment, Trade and Industry minister Dato¡¯ Sri Mustapa Mohamed.
This discussion examined the crucial interface between scientific reasoning and evidence-based policymaking, potentially influencing governmental approaches to global challenges.
